Pumpsets to turn expensive as manufacturers in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat face raw material price pressure
Pumpset manufacturers in the major hubs in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat have decided to increase the selling cost of pumpsets to sustain business. This was decided at a joint meeting of the Indian Pump Manufacturers’ Association (IPMA), the Rajkot Engineering Association (REA) and the Southern India Engineering Manufacturers Association (SIEMA). According to K. V. Karthik, president of the IPMA, and Mithun Ramdas, president of the SIEMA, 2025-2026 is particularly challenging for the pump manufacturing sector. The monsoon rains, which began in May 2025, led to an early end of the domestic season for pumpsets. Although the agricultural season was expected to perform well from September to December 2025, the rains continued resulting in a total failure of the pump season. This had a significant impact on profit margins, as production volumes remained low and overhead costs increased. Further, since June 2025, the prices of key raw materials - copper and aluminium - have risen substantially. Copper prices, in particular, are up nearly 50 % between June and December, while aluminium prices surged by around 40%. This has led to a price hike of approximately 7% in surface pumps and 5% in submersible pumps, they said in a press release. Unfortunately, due to the overall market slowdown, many companies were unable to pass on the increase to customers and, as a result, incurred losses. The micro and small manufacturers are facing severe financial strain. It was decided at a meeting of the managing committee members of the three associations that an immediate increase in price of pumpsets in proportion to the increase in raw material costs is required to sustain business. Mr. Karthik told The Hindu that the manufacturers may have to increase the selling price by 8 % to 10 % to remain in business. The market did not support a price hike in the past as the pump industry is facing various challenges for the last three years. If the units do not increase the prices now, they are likely to incur huge losses, he said. Published - December 27, 2025 07:59 pm IST
