Man who worked at same firm for 84 years lists three things that helped him keep his job In a world where almost half of us will face the stress of redundancy at some point in our lives, one man who stayed in the same job for a decade has revealed the secret to his staying power The average UK worker changes jobs every five years or so , with older employees being particularly loyal. But Walter Orthmann was a special case. After being recruited as a temporary worker at the age of 15, he remained with the same company until well past his 100th birthday. With layoffs being a fact of life, and around 45% of us facing redundancy at some point in our working lives, Walter revealed the secret of how he had managed to hang onto his job for 84 years. Orthamnn says the trick is simply "staying curious, learning constantly, and really doing what you love.” He also recommended that people take care of their diet, sleep, and avoid stress, adding: "Don't get nervous, do everything laughing. Only do what you enjoy doing. I like working here at the company, I used to enjoy traveling (for work), and that way you don't even feel the time passing. “Don't have enemies,” he said. “Apologise. Live peacefully. Life is just a passage here on Earth, enjoy it, do what you want.” Outlining his philosophy of life, Walter said: ”I don’t do much planning, nor care much about tomorrow. All I care about is that tomorrow will be another day in which I will wake up, get up, exercise and go to work; you need to get busy with the present, not the past or the future. Here and now is what counts. So, let’s go to work!" As Walter celebrated his 100th birthday, his colleagues recognised his remarkable versatility over the years. Over eight decades with textile company ReneauxView, Walter has managed to adapt to everything from accounting books, to global supply chains, and enterprise software. Many of Walter’s younger colleagues describe him as “a mentor" who guided them with a firm hand and led “quietly,” listening first and leading by example. It was his kindness and willingness to help, bosses at the company said, that meant they had never considered letting him go. Born in Brazil to German parents in 1922, Walter was described as an excellent student, but at the age of 15, he dropped out of school to provide financial assistance to his family. And so, on January 17, 1938, he was hired as a packing assistant. In a 2020 television interview about his unusually lengthy tenure with the company, Walter recalled how he saw his first calculator a few years after he first started the job. Soon after starting with the company, Walter was promoted to a position in sales. Later, he went on to become a successful Sales Manager. Brazil’s strict labour laws have been partly responsible for Walter’s long tenure at the...
