Pilot booked for ‘assaulting’ passenger at Delhi airport

Days after Air India Express suspended one of its pilots for allegedly assaulting a passenger at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, the Delhi police on Monday registered an FIR against the pilot. The FIR was registered based on the victim’s complaint. “We have registered an FIR under Sections 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 126 (wrongful restraint), and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,” said a senior police officer. According to the complainant, Ankit Dewan, the pilot, Virender Sejwal, who was off duty, physically assaulted him near the security area of IGI airport’s Terminal 1 on December 19. Mr. Dewan also mentioned that the altercation left him bleeding and had traumatised his seven-year-old daughter. Row over jumping queue “The complainant alleged that the dispute broke out after he objected to staff members cutting the queue at the security checkpoint, following which the pilot abused him verbally before assaulting him physically,” said the police officer. The victim had posted photographs and shared details of the incident on social media that went viral. In response, the airlines stated that the pilot had been removed from official duties.
