Number of young widows on the rise in T.N.: AIADMK MLA

There is an alarming rise in the number of young women becoming widows in Tamil Nadu, according to AIADMK MLA and Deputy Leader in Legislative Assembly R.B. Udayakumar. Speaking to media persons here on Friday, he said that the DMK government is relying on the revenue from TASMAC and neglected the consequences due to this. “Without a licence, the TASMAC shops are allowed to open, while the FSSAI authorities have mandated cycle-wallahs selling Idiyappams (string hoppers) to take licence....” “Unconcerned about the livelihood issues, the officials have announced that those selling idiyappams through mobile service shall obtain appropriate licence. Is this the Dravida model,” Mr Udayakumar asked and urged the government to be a little bit concerned about the economically weaker sections in the society. He said that the government boasts of having achieved very many programmes for the people. It is nothing but a bunch of lies, he said. “They are unable to even appoint a regular DGP as Head of Police Force. In a nutshell, the government has become so weak which reflected its inability to fill up mandatory posts like DGP. It is a shame that the police department is functioning with some one holding in-charge of the top post. To a query on Tamil Nadu being neglected by the Union government, Mr Udayakumar wanted to know the performance of the MPs from the State. “What have they all (39 MPs) done for their constituencies from the Central funds,” he asked. They have done nothing tangible and the people are fed up, which would reflect in the 2026 Assembly election. He said that while the DMK high command may state that the alliance partners were intact, the people are not going to commit a mistake this time. “Wait and watch. there will be a change. People are fed up. All classes in the society are disappointed....” he charged. Claiming that the AIADMK would steer victory in alliance with the BJP and that Edappadi K Palaniswami would rule the State, he asserted that the Lok Sabha election results showed that the AIADMK-BJP combine percentage was higher in many constituencies. With the people’s anger rising day by day, the chances of victory for the AIADMK led group looked bright every day. The lost sheen would be restored only by the AIADMK and the claims of the DMK government had been proven as false. He demanded the DMK government to explain the reason for announcing the distribution of laptops now at the fag end of their five-year rule. “After having suspended the programme introduced by the AIADMK, the DMK had felt the heat.... The people can no more be deceived,” he said. Published - December 26, 2025 09:28 pm IST
