The incident raised the sense of fear and anger radiating across the city as fresh clashes broke out between protesters and law enforcement officials near the incident as Minneapolis city officials appealed for calm. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said the situation in the city was “unsustainable”. “This is an impossible situation that our city is presently being put in and at the same time we are trying to find a way forward to keep people safe, to protect our neighbors, to maintain order,” Mayor Frey said. Amid US President Donald Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, tensions have remained high in Minneapolis since the January 7 fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent. Protesters gathered near the incident site on Wednesday and demanded that immigration agents leave the city as federal agents, who were wearing gas masks and helmets, fired tear gas as protesters threw stones and shot fireworks. The gathering was called unlawful assembly by the Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara during a press briefing and said that “people need to leave”. ( with inputs from AP )
