Pablo and Juan De Dios LarraĂn Launch Streaming Platform Pijama for Undistributed Films (EXCLUSIVE)
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Pablo LarraĂn and his brother and producing partner, Juan De Dios LarraĂn, have launched pijama , a streaming platform for independent and undistributed films. Cristian Jofre The TVOD platform allows filmmakers and producers to upload their films directly to pijama, select release territories, set pricing and run digital marketing campaigns. “We’ve been [filmmakers] for 25 years...and we travel the world to film festivals, not only the main film festivals, but everywhere,” Pablo, best known for directing “Jackie,” “Spencer” and “Maria,” tells me. “There’s an enormous frustration, because, literally, most movies - 80-90% - don’t have distribution. Access has become the main word of this process, of this concept.” For a flat fee of $100, filmmakers can upload, encode, store and stream a film for two years. Rental pricing can be set between $3.99 and $9.99, granting viewers a 72-hour viewing window over 30 days. Audiences can rent films worldwide, with 80% of revenue paid directly to producers, sales agents and distributors after transactional costs and applicable taxes. It’s not possible,” Pablo says. “They have to choose and the reality in Latin America, the reality in Asia, the reality in Europe, and, for sure, in the United States, it’s insane, the amount of movies that end up just on the filmmaker and producer’s hard drive, they have to shelve it. Very few movies actually get to be seen.” The LarraĂns founded the new venture with award-winning executive creative director Cristian Jofre. “We want to be very transparent about all the metrics, how many people watch their film, how much money they are making,” Jofre says. “They can go to pijama and see all of it on a daily basis. Where are the countries that the users are coming from, but also give access for them to control their narrative and control their promotion.” “Most of the streamers are not very transparent about information, how many people watch your movies, how much money they are making,” he continues. “But in this case, again, as Pablo says, it’s all about the access. We are giving pretty much full access in pijama.” The platform is now available across Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Smart TVs, iOS, and Android. The user interface will also be simplified. “When you go to a platform, you normally spend a lot of time trying to understand what to watch, and you scroll down, down, down, down, and sometimes you end up seeing nothing,” Juan says. “We’re working on building a community that will take time, but for now, we’re building a catalog, and we will have a place where it goes what to see, and we’ll see the most watched. This will be the five most seen films, the five more ranking film, but that’s it. We never go down, down endless, because we don’t like that, that experience. We want search off and movie on.” Pijama welcomes AI projects. “We’re also a place for...
