Haridwar hotel cancel Christmas event after protest by Hindu groups

A Haridwar based hotel, situated on the banks of river Ganga, cancelled a series of events organised ahead of Christmas following protests by the Hindu groups. Hotel Bhagirathi, a property owned by Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department and run by a private hotel chain, cancelled play shows, DJ night and other events planned ahead Christmas, an official from the hotel confirmed. The hotel had advertised about its Christmas events on social media on which the Hindu groups objected to, he said. Secretary Shri Ganga Sabha, Ujjwal Pandit, in a post on social media, warned that Christmas celebration on the banks of the Ganges would not be tolerated and asked the organisers to cancel it immediately. Ganga Sabha is an organisation that organises Ganga aarti and other religious events at Har Ki Pauri, the most prominent ghat at Haridwar. “Events related to foreign culture will not be tolerated on the banks of the Ganges,” Mr. Pandit said threatening of dire consequences if the event would happen.
