Pregnant woman killed for intercaste marriage; husband, in-laws injured

In a case of reported honour killing, a pregnant young woman who had returned to the village few months after her intercaste marriage, was attacked with lethal weapons resulting in her death in the hospital. Her husband and in-laws have also sustained injuries. The brutal attack took place at Inam Veerapur village near Belagali of Hubballi taluk on Sunday (December 21, 2025) and the pregnant woman and the baby in her womb succumbed to the injuries on Sunday night. The deceased has been identified as Manya Vivekanad Doddamani (19). Her husband Vivekananda Doddamani, his parents too have suffered injuries and are admitted to a private hospital in Hubballi. Following the incident, Superintendent of Police Gunjan Arya, Hubballi Dharwad Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar, Inspector Murugesh Channannavar visited hospital in Hubballi to collect details of the injured. As a precautionary measure security has been beefed up around the hospital and in the village. According to SP Gunjan Arya, two persons namely Prakashgouda Patil and Arungouda Patil have been taken into custody and case has been registered against eight people. The reasons for the assault and murder are being investigated. Manya Patil had married Vivekanand Doddamani (of the same village), who belonged to a different caste, in the month of May 2025, to which the girl’s parents had strongly opposed. Subsequently, the tahsildar and the police had intervened calling both families for a truce and registered a case as a precautionary measure. However because of reported threat for life, the couple had shifted to Haveri. Sources said that the couple had returned to the village on December 8, and on Sunday (December 21, 2025), Manya’s father and others had assaulted Mr. Vivekananda and his father, who were working in the field. Subsequently, they barged into the house and attacked Manya, her mother-in-law Ms. Renavva and others in the house.
