Goschen Library in Chintadripet set for a new lease of life; to be opened in January
A walk down the Arunachalam Street in Chintadripet, it was quite easy to miss the almost 100-year-old dilapidated Goschen Library situated in a corner. But not anymore. Newly renovated, the library now compels attention from not only bookworms but also history lovers. It will be opened to the public in early January. A year in the making, the library was restored by the Public Works Department (PWD) at a cost of ₹2.36 crore. Spread over 2.636 sq. ft., the historic structure built in classical style of architecture has now undergone renovations with a Madras terrace roof, wall plastering and structural strengthening. With over 18,000 books stocked, the library now has dedicated reading spaces, computers, and refurbished toilets. Space has also been provided for students preparing for competitive exams, and for holding discussions and interactive sessions. Children’s section “We are also planning to designate a room for the children’s section and another for women readers. Further, with an expansive front yard, efforts will also be taken to make the outer space reader friendly with benches and chairs,” said an official from the Directorate of Public Libraries. In 1926, P. Vijiaragavulu Chetty, a contractor and resident of Chintadripet constructed a free public library in the locality. Later, the library was opened by Viscount Goschen, the then Governor of Madras and the library, therefore, came to be known as the Goschen Library. Ashmitha Athreya, trustee, Madras Inherited, said the Goschen Library, initially the P. Vijayaragavalu Chetty Hall, is a significant landmark in Chintadripet, for learning and community discourse. “Such libraries, which are local initiatives, shed light on efforts taken by Indians to support shared spaces for intellectual engagement. The library enables the community to engage with not only history but also with resources that are not always accessible to everyone,” Ms. Athreya said. The Librarian-in-Charge, C.A. Mohanarangam, said that as awareness about the library increased, patronage also rose. “A daily footfall of 45 members is seen as many use the space to not only marvel at the heritage building, but also to prepare for exams. The renovated library will definitely help the community in increasing readership,” he said. Madras Library Association secretary Pi. Janaarthanan said a good library space helps the public be well informed on various matters. Published - December 26, 2025 05:41 am IST
