Fall in serious crime incidents in most categories - CSO

The incidence of serious crime has fallen in most categories, according to latest CSO crime figures released today. Recorded robberies were down by 13% over a 12-month period, according to the CSO figures (stock image) Homicide and related offences fell by 25%, with 22 fewer incidents; recorded robberies, extortion and hijackings were down by 13% while burglary and related offences were down by 12%. The figures cover the 12-month period up to the end of September this year. Recorded sexual offences stabilised, remaining virtually unchanged at 3,617 for the year, while there were minor increases in attempted murder, assaults and related offences which were up 3% and public order offences up 2%. Recorded crime fell in 15 of the 12 most serious categories over the 12-month period. Fraud and related offences were also down 6%, but the CSO has said that this relates to offences only reported directly to gardaí and not those reported by financial institutions as required by law. The number of male victims of crime rose by 4% to 3,870 when the third quarter of this year is compared to last year, while the number of female victims fell by 4% to 2,473. The CSO also said that it has extended the recorded crime series to include crime incidents for speeding and dangerous or careless driving and motorway offences.
