Niagara Members of Niagara Regional Police position themselves along Second Street, close to the location where an officer was shot in Welland, Ont., while police were responding to reports of gunfire on Friday, Dec. 19, 2025.(The Canadian Press/Nick Iwanyshyn) Man accused of shooting officer in Welland, Ont., remains in hospital, Niagara police say 59-year-old arrested after 24-hour standoff, charged with attempted murder Saturday Police in Niagara Region say a man who was arrested and injured by gunfire in Welland, Ont., after an officer was shot on Friday remains in hospital and will likely face further charges as the province's police watchdog continues to investigate. Niagara regional police had issued a shelter-in-place order in the area of Plymouth Road and Second Street around 7:45 a.m. ET after police were met with gunfire while helping bylaw officers deal with a "fencing issue" around what is believed to be an old church converted into a home. Police say an officer was shot in the chest and later released from hospital with minor injuries. Daniel Tronko, 59, was arrested and charged with attempted murder on Saturday after a nearly 24-hour standoff with police. The Special Investigations Unit said in a statement Saturday that it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the "serious injury" the suspect suffered after he was shot by a police officer. Niagara police say the accused remained in hospital Monday, but they could not provide further details due to the SIU investigation. Police say they anticipate laying more charges and will likely release further information after the SIU finishes its concurrent investigation. The police watchdog investigates incidents involving police and civilians that have resulted in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
