Inam Veerapur residents air grievances as MLA, Deputy Commissioner visit them
With the situation continuing to be tense in Inam Veerapur village of Hubballi taluk of Dharwad district where the honour killing was reported on Sunday, Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu G.R.J., along with Kundgol MLA M.R. Patil and police officials, visited the village on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the number of arrested people in the case has increased to eight. A search is on for the remaining accused. The Deputy Commissioner and the MLA, accompanied by Superintendent of Police Gunjan Arya, Police Inspector Murugesh Channannavar and members of Dalit organisations, visited the houses of Vivekanand Doddamani and his relatives which have been locked and barricaded now as the family members are being treated at a private hospital in Hubballi after they suffered injuries in the attack. Security has been tightened as a precautionary measure. The Deputy Commissioner and the MLA interacted with the village residents some of whom aired their grievances. Jakkappanavar visited Vivekanand Hospital in Hubballi on Wednesday to meet and enquire about the health of Vivekanand Doddamani (husband of the deceased Manya) and his family members who are getting treated for injuries they sustained in the assault. Mr. Jakkappanavar was accompanied by Dalit leaders Venkatesh Sagabal, Ashok Doddamani, Basavaraj Benakal and others during the visit. He consoled the family members and extended financial assistance personally. Mr. Tenginakai and Mr. Abbayya consoled the victims and sought details from the doctors about their health and the treatment being given. Compensation On Tuesday night, Ms. Divya Prabhu visited the private hospital where the injured are getting treatment and handed over a cheque of ₹5 lakh to the family members of Vivekand Doddamani. Along with Vivekanand Doddaani, Mareppa Doddamani, Sunil Harijan, Sangeeta Harijan, Renavva, Ananya Doddamani, Yallappa Doddamani, Huvamma Doddamani sustained injuries in the assault and are being treated at Vivekanand Hospital in Hubballi. The Deputy Commissioner enquired about their health and sought further details from the doctors treating the injured. Earlier, there was high drama for some time at the hospital as members of Dalit organisations staged a protest taking exception to the Deputy Commissioner’s visit to hospital on the third day of the incident. They tried to block her car and staged a sit-in to register their protest against what they termed official apathy. The police intervened to bring normality.
