App that helps travellers locate nearby toilets launched in Kerala

Minister for Local Self-Governments M.B. Rajesh has said that the government intends to make extensive use of technology in waste management. Speaking after launching the ‘KLOO’ mobile app, which helps travellers locate the nearest safe and well-maintained public toilet, he said the government had introduced the ‘Harithamithram 2.0’ app for doorstep collection of waste. This includes online payment facilities, improved monitoring of doorstep waste collection, Malayalam language support, and integration with the K-SMART system. The ‘Take a Break’ project has been launched through local bodies to address the shortage of adequate public toilets across the State, particularly for women travellers. “A total of 1,832 toilets have been made ready, and more will be added soon. In addition, five new plants with the capacity to process all sanitary waste generated in the State will become operational in the coming months,” he said. The KLOO app enables users to identify the most convenient toilets from a network of public facilities and those in private hotels. This has been achieved in collaboration with local bodies and the Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association. The app was developed by Frugal Scientific Private Ltd for the Suchitwa Mission. Mr. Rajesh said the State had overcome the most difficult stage in waste processing and sanitation. Following the resolution of the Brahmapuram issue, the collection of non-biodegradable waste by the Haritha Karma Sena had increased from 37% to 95%. With changes to regulations, the collection of waste and the charging of user fees have been made mandatory. The number of mini material collection facilities (MCFs) has risen from 7,000 to 21,000. The process of setting up compressed biogas (CBG) plants at seven centres across the State is under way, the Minister said. Published - December 23, 2025 10:46 pm IST
