[Warning: Potentially Triggering Content] Details of a truly heartbreaking search for a missing child have emerged. Brace yourself for this one... A relentless search for missing child Melodee Buzzard has come to a tragic and final conclusion after the 9-year-old was found dead. The child’s name first began filtering through news stations back in October, when a local school informed police about her “prolonged” absence. She had been enrolled in the school since August and attended as usual, but when she failed to show up for several days in a row, staff members grew concerned... and that’s when police uncovered details of a cross-state journey. According to the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office , on October 7, Melodee’s mother Ashlee Buzzard , 40, took the child on a road trip beginning in Lompoc, California and reaching Nebraska, hitting several states in between. Surveillance footage depicts the mother-daughter duo at a rental car shop in Lompoc the day their journey began - but not in their usual appearances. According to authorities, Melodee and her mother were seen wearing wigs in what appeared to be an attempt to disguise their identities while renting a white 2024 Chevrolet Malibu . Throughout their travels, Ashlee allegedly swapped the license plate on the vehicle and took precautions when entering gas stations, seemingly to cover up her tracks. The following day, Ashlee returned to her Lompoc home solo, with no sign of Melodee in sight. Four days after that is when the missing person report was officially filed. Ashlee reportedly refused to cooperate with police during a welfare check. So cops obtained a warrant to search Ashlee’s home and the rental car she used on the trip. At the end of the month, cops discovered ammunition and cartridges, but no weapon. And still no sign of Melodee. Fast forward to November 7, Ashlee is bizarrely arrested on an unrelated charge after she allegedly “prevented a victim from leaving a location” in Lompoc. Details were not disclosed, but cops said the incident happened days before. Regardless, she was released. Then about a month later, the unfathomable was discovered. While on vacation near Caineville, Utah, two tourists traveled into the desert for a photoshoot. And while exploring, they found a decomposing body. According to Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown , the identification of the remains were delayed due to its decomposition, but it was clear gunshot wounds were present. Then on Monday of this week, a breakthrough in Melodee’s case emerged: the FBI confirmed through DNA analysis that the decomposing remains were the child’s. How awful... On Tuesday, Ashlee was arrested in her Lompoc home and charged with first-degree murder . She was booked into the Santa Barbara County Northern Branch Jail , where she’s being held without bail. What a grim, senseless killing. And one allegedly carried out by Melodee’s own...
