Panic in Kremlin as Russia could 'run out of cash' for Ukraine war in just six months EXCLUSIVE: Yuriy Boyechko told the Express that the only way to stop Vladimir Putin was to destroy the Russian economy. Vladimir Putin could run out money to fund his illegal and brutal war in Ukraine in as little as six months, according to an expert. But for that to happen, the West would have to enforce their sanctions rigorously and close all loopholes - particularly on Russian oil and gas exports. Russia 's economy has been put on to a war footing with huge amounts of money going into its military industrial complex. Last year roughly 40% of the Kremlin's budget was earmarked for spending on the army and security services. The war is estimated to be costing Putin an astonishing US$500 million and US$1 billion per day. Although the European Union has placed sanctions on Russia's energy sector and reduced its imports of the Kremlin's fossil fuels - exemptions still exist. The EU spent €1.15 billion (£996m) on Russian fossil fuels in August 2025, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). The main buyers were Hungary, Slovakia, France, the Netherlands and Belgium. Spain, Italy and Austria were also among those still purchasing Russian energy products. Yuriy Boyechko is the CEO of the charity Hope For Ukraine that provides humanitarian assistance to his country of origin. Now living in the US, he told the Express that Putin and his cronies still believe they can achieve all their goals militarily and that the only way for the war to stop is if the Kremlin runs out of money. "You need to stop playing these games with kiddie gloves and really put on full force sanctions," he said. "Europeans have to stop buying all the goods and from doing every type of business they've been doing with Russia . Go full on cold turkey. The ships [oil tankers] need to be blocked. "I believe that the Russian economy can survive just six months without outside infusion." However, Mr Boyechko also acknowledged that Putin would probably respond by freezing the bank accounts of Russians and using their money to keep funding the war. He estimated that in a such a scenario, the Kremlin could keep going for roughly another 18 to 24 months
