Puducherry Student Performs Bharatanatyam 20 Ft Underwater To Speak For The Oceans: ‘Stop Dumping Plastic’ Despite being submerged and unable to hear the music, her rhythm was spot on and she nailed the dance performance to the song Pranavalaya from Sai Pallavi’s film Shyam Singha Roy. As pollution continues to worsen and impact quality of life, awareness and action have become more important than ever. To raise awareness about ocean pollution, a young girl from Puducherry took matters into her own hands and chose an extraordinary way to spread her message. A video that has gone viral on social media showed the young girl named Tharagai Arathana, a dancer and diver, performing nearly 20 feet underwater. Dressed in full traditional Bharatanatyam attire, complete with jewellery and makeup, she chose the depths of the ocean over a stage on land to raise awareness about plastic pollution. On the occasion of International Dance Day, Tharagai performed Bharatanatyam underwater near Rameswaram at the Bay of Bengal. Through her graceful movements, she transformed the classical dance form into a visual message about the damage plastic waste is causing to marine life and ocean ecosystems. In the clip, Tharagai shared, “So we have danced underwater wearing a traditional Bharatanatyam outfit to raise awareness on plastics." Despite being submerged and unable to hear the music, her rhythm was spot on, and she nailed the dance performance to the song Pranavalaya from Sai Pallavi’s film Shyam Singha Roy. Tharagai was also joined by her cousin, Aswin. Coming from a coastal region closely connected to the fishing community, the duo said their goal was not only to encourage young people to take up dance but also to draw attention to the serious issue of plastic pollution in the oceans.
