2 arrested in attempt to murder case over exchange of fire

Two persons were arrested on charges of attempt to murder following an exchange of fire in Narela, an official said on Thursday, adding that the accused are involved in multiple cases under the Arms Act, including attempt to murder, robbery, and assault. The shootout took place after the police received specific information and laid a special picket behind the MIT campus in Narela. During checking, two persons riding a motorcycle were signalled to stop. Instead of complying, they attempted to flee and opened fire, shooting three rounds at the police team, an official said. “In self-defence, the police party retaliated by firing three rounds, during which both accused sustained bullet injuries to their legs. The accused were overpowered and apprehended on the spot,” said Hareshwar Swamy, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Outer North. “Both injured accused were initially taken to RHC Hospital and later referred to BSA Hospital. After treatment for minor injuries, both have been discharged,” he said. The arrested persons have been identified as Afzal alias Imran and Chandan alias Kaku, both residents of Narela. They were arrested in connection with an attempt-to-murder case in which the victim, Babu, sustained bullet injuries after allegedly being shot at by Afzal and Chandan, who fled the spot. The police had registered a case under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (attempt to murder) and Section 27 of the Arms Act. The police recovered two pistols, five cartridges and two mobile phones from the accused. While Chandan is involved in around 12 criminal cases, including attempt to murder with firearms, robbery with firearms, theft and offences causing bodily harm, Afzal has 33 criminal cases against him, including instances of robbery, theft, bodily offences, POCSO-related offences, eve-teasing and cases under the Gangster Act, the police said.
