New E INK Phone concept has two screens
There is a new E INK phone that might hit a retail shelf near you. It has a dual-screen setup, with an LCD and an E INK screen. The screens are stacked on top of each other, making it very unique. The fundamental configuration consists of a 3.5-inch IPS LCD at the top and a 5.2-inch E Ink panel below, both located on the front. The specifications include a resolution of 1280 × 800 at 120 Hz for the LCD and 1300 × 838 at 300 ppi for the E Ink. The transparent back, featuring a single camera and minimal branding, subtly indicates that this phone is not pursuing the typical multi-lens, all-screen specifications, but rather presents the front as a combination of two distinctly different surfaces. The 3.5-inch LCD has a 120 Hz refresh rate, which should make it good for video and web browsing. The smaller LCD serves as the “burst of color” area for displaying time, notifications, music controls, and quick interactions. At the same time, the larger E Ink section is dedicated to reading, note-taking, and simple widgets. The clear advantages include reduced visual clutter, enhanced eye comfort, and potentially significantly improved battery life. E Ink technology consumes power only during refreshes, so a reading-centric layout allows the phone to remain idle for extended periods without depleting the battery. For users who primarily engage in messaging, reading, and calendar checking, the large E Ink display can handle most daily tasks. At the same time, the LCD remains off or in a low-power mode, greatly extending battery life. Michael Kozlowski has written about audiobooks, e-books and e-readers for the past eighteen years.
