'People Love Baahubali In Japan,' Says Japanese Filmmaker Kei Ishikawa On Bollywood's Popularity There

'People Love Baahubali In Japan,' Says Japanese Filmmaker Kei Ishikawa On Bollywood's Popularity There Kei Ishikawa’s film A Pale View of Hills, adapted from Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, debuts in India after Cannes and IFFI, marking his first official release in the country. Japanese filmmaker Kei Ishikawa is set to reach Indian audiences for the first time, with his latest film A Pale View of Hills slated to stream in the country following its festival run. The film, which was showcased at both the Cannes Film Festival and the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), will soon be available on BookMyShow Stream, marking Ishikawa’s official India debut. Reflecting on the changing landscape of film distribution, Ishikawa acknowledged that such a release would have been challenging a few years ago. “That’s true. I am super happy because of it," he said, pointing to the role streaming platforms now play in expanding access to global cinema. Recommended Stories However, he also noted that dedicated film students often find ways to watch international content regardless of availability. “But at the same time, I know students of cinema would anyway have downloaded it from somewhere. When they want it, they find a way! But there are so many small, arthouse films from all over the world that are still not available, and streaming platforms are helping them a lot," he added. A Pale View of Hills is adapted from Kazuo Ishiguro’s 1982 novel of the same name. Speaking about the creative process, Ishikawa explained that the film required narrative changes. “When I decided to make a film on this novel, I felt I had to change some things. The book was told from a mother’s point of view. We changed it to a story about how the daughter discovers the mother’s history." Ishikawa also shared his observations on the popularity of Indian cinema in Japan. According to him, mainstream Hindi films enjoy a strong following. “People watch a lot of Bollywood films; they are very popular, especially Baahubali. A lot of my friends watch them." He added that his recent visit to India introduced him to the country’s independent cinema as well. “I also recently got to know that the Indian film industry makes a lot of arthouse films. I saw some in Goa. I have to start watching more of them," he said. view comments News movies hollywood 'People Love Baahubali In Japan,' Says Japanese Filmmaker Kei Ishikawa On Bollywood's Popularity There Terms of Use and Privacy Policy .
