Politico Frames European Christmas Celebrations as 'Far-Right Spectacle'
Politico is framing the celebration of Christmas as a âfar-rightâ front in Europe, arguing that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her party have made it a âspectacle.â Maria Grazia Picciarella/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images Conservative social media users blasted the left-wing outletâs Wednesday article, âHow the far right stole Christmas,â authored by Rome correspondent Hannah Roberts. âNot a âfar rightâ concept.. politico is such a joke,â wrote podcast host Mel K: âWow, imagine marking Christmas as being Christian. Revolutionary thinking in Europa,â wrote former Breitbart News journalist Chris Tomlinson: In the Christmas Eve piece, Roberts wrote that the holiday âis becoming a new front line in Europeâs culture wars,â with so-called âfar-rightâ parties and politicians âclaiming the festive season as their own.â The evidence?: Meloniâs defense of public Nativity scenes and other long-standing Christmas traditions in her majority-Catholic country. âIn Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has made the defense of Christmas traditions central to her political identity. She has repeatedly framed the holiday as part of the nationâs endangered heritage, railing against what she calls âideologicalâ attempts to dilute it,â Roberts wrote. She continued to frame Europeâs conservative parties as âfar-rightâ for preserving Christian culture, writing, âFranceâs National Rally and Spainâs Vox have similarly opposed secularist or âwokeâ efforts to replace religious imagery with neutral seasonal language, and advocated for nativity scenes in town halls.â âIn Germany, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has warned that Christmas markets are losing their âGerman character,â amplifying disinformation about Muslim traditions edging out Christian ones,â she stated. Former Republican congressional candidate Robby Starbuck wished Politico a âMerry Christmasâ while calling them âcommies.â ââThose dang Christians claiming the celebration of their Saviorâs birth as their own.â You might want to ask yourself why youâre being ratioed,â wrote Ellie A: âJesus is the reason for the season,â said Dustin Grage. âCry harder.â Olivia Rondeau is a politics reporter for Breitbart News based in Washington, DC.
