Symposium on Siddha medicine The need to strengthen traditional systems of medicine through scientific research and academic collaboration was emphasised at a national symposium on the theme “Evidence-Based Siddha - A Renaissance of Tradition through Modern Medicine” held by the Department of Pharmacognosy, Periyar College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tiruchi, recently. Retired District Siddha Medical Officers S. Govindaraj, (Thanjavur) and S. Kamaraj (Tiruchi), shared their insights on bridging clinical experience and research innovation in the expert lectures. The programme featured 49 research presentations, covering Siddha medicine, botany and pharmacognosy, among topics. Special display stalls were put up on herbal products, traditional rice varieties, herbal plants, and traditional food. Digital tools Using online tools effectively in scholarly communication was the focus of a national workshop organised by Department of Library and Information Science, Bharathidasan University, under the auspices of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan recently. In his inaugural address, S. Subbiah, former Vice-Chancellor, Alagappa University, Karaikudi, spoke on the importance of digital tools and their role in information access and library systems in Europe and the West. Subject experts from various educational institutions helmed the sessions of the workshop. Skill contests Over 450 students participated in Dexter Fest ’25, a programme featuring inter-departmental skill development competitions at Bishop Heber College recently. The contests included Mr./Ms. Dexter, Reference Art, Ad-Zap, Group discussion, Quiz, among others. The overall winner trophy was won by the Department of Actuarial Science. The Department of Commerce won the runner-up trophy. Cyber security Cybercrime and safe digital practices were the focus of an awareness programme conducted by National Service Scheme (NSS) and Internal Quality Assurance Cell of Cauvery College for Women in collaboration with SCOPE India Charitable Trust, Karur Vysya Bank, and Cyber Crime Police, Tiruchi District, recently. In his address, Simon Arulprakasham, legal advisor, SCOPE India and High Court, Madras, spoke on various types of cybercrime, including online frauds, phishing, identity theft, cyber stalking, and social media misuse. V .Shankar, Tiruchi City Cyber Crime Head Constable, explained the importance of creating strong passwords, avoiding suspicious links, and safeguarding personal information. Endowment lecture M.A. Aleem, neurologist, spoke on the topic “Neurological analysis of education in Tirukkural’ while delivering the Samsutheen Endowment lecture at the PG and Research Department of Tamil, Jamal Mohamed College, and Tiruchi Tamil Sangam recently. In his address, Dr. Aleem created awareness among students about the importance of maintaining physical and mental health. Financial literacy N. Sundar, empanelled auditor for Indian Overseas Bank and empanelled trainer for NSE-SEBI, SMART, was the resource person at a two-day workshop on financial literacy organised by the PG and Research Department of Commerce at Shrimati Indira Gandhi College recently. In his address, Mr. Sundar said that financial freedom could be accessed only through systematic and informed investment practices. Special emphasis was given to the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), highlighting its function as an electronic marketplace for commodity trading.
