Mary Thomas, T.K. Sudheesh take oath as Thrissur district panchayat president, vice-president

Mary Thomas of the Left Democratic Front from the Vazhani division was elected 12th president of the Thrissur district panchayat on Saturday, while T.K. Sudheesh, also representing the LDF from the Kattur division, assumed office as vice-president. Both leaders secured decisive victories in the elections held at the District Panchayat Conference Hall, winning 21 of the 30 votes cast in their respective contests. The presidential election, conducted at 10.40 a.m., saw Ms. Thomas competing against E.A. Omana from the Puthur division, the United Democratic Front candidate, who secured nine votes. District Collector Arjun Pandian administered the oath of office to Ms. Thomas. The ceremony was attended by Revenue Minister K. Rajan, Social Justice Minister R. Bindu, former district panchayat president V.S. Prince, district panchayat secretary Toby Jose, elected members, public representatives, and political party delegates. In the vice-presidential election, conducted at 2.30 p.m., Mr. Sudheesh defeated UDF candidate Shamseera Ashraf from the Vadakkekad division, who secured nine votes. After the announcement of the results, Ms. Thomas administered the oath of office to Mr. Sudheesh, while Mr. Pandian oversaw the election proceedings. Even as the Thrissur Corporation swung decisively in favour of the UDF, the larger political map of the district continued to be in favour of the LDF. Apart from the Thrissur district panchayat, the LDF emerged ahead in five of the seven municipalities. At the block panchayat level, the LDF led in 10 of the 16 blocks, the UDF in five, while one block ended in a tie. In the grama panchayats, the LDF maintained its edge, leading in 44 of the 86 panchayats. The UDF led in 34, the NDA managed lead in one, while seven panchayats witnessed a tie.
