Stranger Things 5: The Duffer Brothers Explain ‘Un-Proposal’ Scene Between Nancy And Jonathan The Duffer Brothers revealed the ‘un-proposal’ scene was actually Jonathan and Nancy breaking up. Stranger Things Season 5 vol. 2 left fans confused with Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers’ ‘un-proposal’. Fans across the world seemed to have been divided on whether it was a proposal or a breakup. Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer revealed to PEOPLE that the scene was indeed a breakup. Recommended Stories The Duffer Brothers Confirm Nancy and Jonathan’s Breakup During an interview with the outlet, Matt Duffer revealed both he and Ross have known “for a while" that a breakup was looming for one of the show’s longest-running couples. “It’s hard to recall when exactly that idea came, but I think we-and the writers-all felt that Nancy needed to end up on her own and be independent and have an opportunity to find herself," Matt shared. He continued, “I mean, how many people wind up with their girlfriend or boyfriend that they met in high school?" It’s a “trauma bond", Ross added. What Happened Between Nancy and Jonathan? Stranger Things Season 5 vol. 2 showed Nancy and Jonathan become trapped inside the Upside Down’s Hawkins lab when a melting, paint-like substance fills the room. Just when they’re convinced they’re going to die, they confess the truth. Nancy tells Jonathan that she hates The Clash, while Jonathan admits that he hates reading Nancy’s articles and finally confesses that he never applied to Emerson - which Nancy knew all along. Jonathan then pulls out an engagement ring he’d been carrying around for days. “I figure that I have screwed up enough with you that it’d be nice to get something right for once, in the end. Nancy Wheeler, will you not marry me?" he asks. Jonathan further explains that it is meant to be an ‘un-proposal’, confessing that he once hoped a proposal would fix everything but now sees it wouldn’t. He puts it even more plainly when he tells Nancy, “I tried to convince myself that this would somehow fix everything, but it was just going to make things worse... So what do you say? Do you accept my un‐proposal?" Moved by Jonathan’s honesty, Nancy replies without hesitation, “I accept your un‐proposal." Following the confession, the characters shared a heartwarming “I love you" moment and a kiss, marking the end of their relationship. view comments News hollywood Stranger Things 5: The Duffer Brothers Explain ‘Un-Proposal’ Scene Between Nancy And Jonathan Terms of Use and Privacy Policy .
