Neon’s ‘Sentimental Value,’ ‘It Was Just an Accident’ and ‘The Secret Agent’ Join Criterion Collection (EXCLUSIVE)

Joachim Trier’s “ Sentimental Value ,” Jafar Panahi’s “ It Was Just an Accident ” and Kleber Mendonça Filho’s “ The Secret Agent ” have been added to the Criterion Collection . The three releases, among the most acclaimed films of 2025, are being distributed by Neon. They are viewed as leading Oscar contenders and all of them have been shortlisted for best international feature. “It Was Just an Accident” was directed by Jafar Panahi and won the Palme d’Or at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, marking Neon’s sixth consecutive Palme d’Or win. It was nominated for four Golden Globes including best motion picture - drama and best director. “Sentimental Value” was directed by Joachim Trier and was Cannes’ Grand Prix winner. The film was nominated for eight Golden Globes, winning best supporting actor for Stellan Skarsgaard, with additional nominations including best picture and best director. “The Secret Agent” was directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho. It was nominated for three Golden Globes including best motion picture - drama and won two, best actor - drama for Wagner Moura and best foreign language film. Neon’s 2026 slate of upcoming releases include Ugo Bienvenu’s “Arco,” releasing Jan. 23; Oliver Laxe’s “Sirat,” releasing Feb. 6, Matt Johnson’s “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie,” releasing Feb. 13 ; Baz Luhrmann’s “EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert,” releasing Feb. 20; Steven Soderbergh’s “The Christophers”; and Boots Riley’s “I Love Boosters,” which is set to open SXSW this year. Popular on Variety Neon previously released “Parasite,” Bong Joon Ho’s darkly comic 2019 thriller, and “Anora,” Sean Baker’s 2024 comedy, both of which won best picture at the Oscars. Other notable releases include “I, Tonya,” “Triangle of Sadness” and “Longlegs.” The Criterion Collection publishes classic and contemporary films from around the world in editions that offer the highest technical quality and original supplements.
