Police impose restrictions to ensure peaceful tourist-friendly Christmas, New Year celebrations in Kanniyakumari district
The Kanniyakumari district police have heightened vigil and imposed restrictions for ensuring tourists-friendly and peaceful Christmas and New Year celebrations across the district, especially in the international tourist destination of Kanniyakumari. Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police R. Stalin said visible policing would be ensured at all places of worship where special prayers would be conducted as part of Christmas and New Year celebrations. Over 1,500 police personnel would be deployed across the district on December 24 and 25 (Christmas) and on December 31 and January 1 to ensure law and order. As part of this security measure, 78 temporary check-posts across the district had been erected in addition to the existing check-posts. A total of 30 mobile patrols, 27 bike patrols, five emergency response teams, five quick response teams, five highway patrol vehicles, and two tourist patrol vehicles had been deployed with breathalysers to avoid crimes, accidents and drunken driving. Moreover, the policemen manning the permanent and temporary check-posts also carry the breathalysers to randomly check the motorists for manoeuvring of vehicles under the influence of alcohol. âRash driving, bike stunts and drunken driving will be seriously dealt with and no mercy will be shown to these violators. Besides cancelling their driving license, cases will be registered under punitive sections of law. Parents allowing their minor children to ride bikes or drive cars will be booked. Weâve registered 108 such cases this year since January last, which will fetch them up to three years imprisonment. Hence, the parents should be behave responsibly considering their childrenâs future,â Dr. Stalin warned. The music concerts in public places and the hotels should be organised as part of the celebrations only after getting due permission from the police. Since the public would throng the shops ahead of festivals, the policemen would be regulating parking of vehicles along the road and the owners of vehicles parked in âNo Parking Zonesâ and placed in haphazard manner to affect smooth flow of vehicular traffic would be booked. The SP urged the public who travel to other places during this holiday to inform the nearby police station so that the law-enforcers would keep an eye on their houses.
