Stranger Things Documentary Director Breaks Silence On Rumor Duffer Brothers Used ChatGPT To Write Series Finale

The director of One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5 has a lot to say about those Chat GPT rumors! In case you didn’t hear, social media has been in a frenzy since the premiere of the Netflix documentary showcasing how the Duffer Brothers wrote season five of the hit series. In the doc, many fans claimed to have seen a Chat GPT logo on one of the brothers’ computer screens, leading to wild rumors that they used the AI program to write the show’s final script! She told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday: “I mean, are we even sure they had ChatGPT open? ... Well, there’s a lot of chatter where [social media users] are like, ‘We don’t really know, but we’re assuming.’ But to me it’s like, doesn’t everybody have it open, to just do quick research?” Oof. That’s a lot of valuable water resources being drained if EVERYONE has it open! Adding on to that, she said it’d basically be impossible to use generative AI to write the show: “How can you possibly write a storyline with 19 characters and use ChatGPT, I don’t even understand ... [I] did not witness an unethical use of generative AI in the writers room. Again, first of all, nobody has actually proved that it was open. That’s like having your iPhone next to your computer while you’re writing a story.” Martina went on to explain that “there’s a lot going on all the time, every time” the Duffer Brothers were writing the show, and suggested they “just use these tools ... while multitasking”. She said of the fans voicing their concerns: “What I find heartbreaking is everybody loves the show, and suddenly we need to pick it apart.” The director also clarified that writing at TV show like this isn’t what it seems on the surface: “I witnessed creative exchanges. I witnessed conversation. People think ‘writers room’ means people are sitting there writing. No, it’s a creative exchange. It’s story development. And, of course, you go places in your creative mind and then you come back [to the script].
