
Chennai Corporation eyes ₹75 crore a year by allowing ads at 1,400 locations from 2026
Greater Chennai Corporation makes plans to generate a revenue of ₹75 crore per annum from January 2026, by roping in private agencies to display ads in over 1,400 locations. The civic body recently floated tenders worth ₹73 crore for the project. According to an official in the Revenue and Finance Department, advertising and bid notice has been sent to private agencies who would be interested. The displays will not in banner format, and rather will be similar to the ones on streetlights. The size will be decided by GCC and the casing for the ads would be done by the private party. The work is expected to begin from mid-January 2026. As per GCC, over 14,000 sites were chosen, which include streetlight poles and parks such as Vijaya Park, Natesan Park, K. K. Nagar Sivan Park, Bharathidasan Colony and Amma Park in Saidapet. Other locations listed were Taisha Park at the IAS Quarters in Koyambedu, Arunachalam Colony, Venkatnarayanan Playground and RR Colony Playground. The project also covered facilities in Vyasarpadi, MKB Nagar, Mullai Nagar, Sharma Nagar, Korattur, Padi, Paadi and Elango Nagar. Bus bays were identified in Ambattur Estate, Avadi, K. K. Nagar, Thiruverkadu and Vadapalani, and streetlights on bus route roads including Dr Ambedkar College Road, Villivakkam Redhills Road, SRP Colony Main Road, Medavakkam Tank Road and Perambur High Road. The project covered 35 bus bays, which together permit a total advertising area of 1,691 sq. m, along with 12,219 bus-route street-light poles with a combined display area of 34,267 sq. m, according to GCC’s Buildings Department. The GCC also plans to allow ad displays at 1,534 parks, with a total display area of 52,437 sq. m, and 614 other street-light poles with 1,223 sq. m of display capacity. The plan additionally includes two large structures - the Mambalam-T. Nagar skywalk and the new steel bridge in T. Nagar - with capacities of 150.73 sq. m and 141.02 sq. m respectively.
