Apple’s iPhone Fold May Use Liquid Metal Hinge: Here’s Why It Matters

By Priya SinghMashable India

Apple’s long-rumoured foldable phone, widely referred to as the iPhone Fold, could finally make its debut this year if recent leaks are anything to go by. Although Apple hasn’t officially revealed its 2026 iPhone plans yet, speculation around the device continues to grow. The latest tip suggests that Apple may use a different hinge material than what’s found in most foldable phones today, something the company has reportedly been experimenting with for over a decade, hinting at a strong focus on durability. A leaker has reiterated claims about the iPhone Fold using a liquid metal hinge and titanium body, going against the current belief that it will have an aluminum body. By @MalcolmOwen https://t.co/Epo2aONhZ8 - AppleInsider (@appleinsider) January 14, 2026 According to a leak shared by tipster @yeux1122 on South Korean platform Naver, Apple could use liquid metal for the hinge of the iPhone Fold. The material is expected to significantly improve hinge durability while reducing stress at the folding point. The rest of the phone’s chassis is tipped to use titanium, giving the device a premium yet sturdy build. Changes in alloy composition and manufacturing processes are also said to help reduce the overall weight of the foldable. Apple has reportedly been experimenting with liquid metal for over 15 years, and the iPhone Fold could finally mark its mainstream debut. The company is said to be Apple’s exclusive supplier for the material, which may be used in key bearing and hinge components of the foldable iPhone. Previous leaks suggest the iPhone Fold will adopt a book-style design with a wide display, similar to the Google Pixel Fold. It could feature a 5.5-inch outer screen and a 7.8-inch inner display, along with a noticeably reduced crease around the hinge. In terms of hardware, the device is rumoured to include dual rear and front cameras, an A20 Pro chipset built on a 2nm process, Apple’s C2 modem, and Touch ID integrated into the power button.
