
Road accident fatalities in Chennai drop by over 10% in 2025: GCTP
The Greater Chennai City Traffic Police (GCTP) has said that fatalities due to road accidents declined by over 10% in 2025 compared to 2024, as of December 23. While 534 fatalities were recorded up to December 15 last year, the number reduced to 479 during the corresponding period in 2025. In addition, grievous hurt cases saw a substantial 64% drop, falling from 2,093 cases last year to 721 this year. Road accidents rise However, the total number of road accidents increased to 3,981 this year from 3,753 last year, marking a rise of 6.07%. Police officials said efforts are under way to bring accident numbers down and maintain them at the previous year’s level. Greater Chennai City Police Commissioner A. Arun said fatalities had been reduced by over 10% compared to last year, and grievous hurt cases had dropped significantly. He added that the GCTP would continue its efforts to reduce accidents and ensure road safety as a top priority. According to statistics provided by the GCTP, during the corresponding period last year up to December 22, 2024, 3,753 accidents were recorded, resulting in 534 fatalities. Grievous injury cases stood at 2,140, simple injury cases at 941, and 138 accidents were reported with no injuries. As of December 22, this year, a total of 3,981 accidents were reported, resulting in 479 fatalities. Of these, 754 cases involved grievous injuries, 2,630 involved simple injuries, and 118 were reported as no-injury accidents, where vehicles were damaged but occupants were unharmed. This year, most motor accidents occurred during peak hours between 9 a.m. and 12 noon, with 711 incidents reported during this period. This was followed by 615 accidents between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., and 602 accidents between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Fewer accidents on weekends Accidents were comparatively fewer on Saturdays and Sundays than on weekdays, owing to strict enforcement measures. Statistics show 588 accidents on Saturdays and 578 on Sundays. Two-wheeler accidents accounted for a major share of road mishaps, with 1,573 such accidents reported and 2,076 persons either injured or killed. In addition, 878 cars, 378 autos, 176 buses, 280 lorries, and 275 vans were involved in road accidents. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) G. Karthikeyan said the GCTP has undertaken various steps and remedial measures to reduce road accidents and enhance road safety across the city through increased enforcement, patrolling, and awareness activities. He added that the GCTP creates impactful awareness among road users by urging the public to maintain road discipline, follow safety guidelines, use protective gear, and educate themselves on road safety. In coordination with experts, the GCTP has facilitated several training programmes for police personnel on technological approaches to accident reduction, along with workshops and safety education programmes for schoolchildren, bus drivers, and delivery agents.
