Woman stabbed to death by father, brother over opposition to her relationship in Madurai
A 24-year-old woman, R. Priyanka of Aruppukottai, was allegedly stabbed to death by her brother, R. Balamurugan, and her father, P. Ramesh, 51, following opposition within the family to her relationship. The police said she had declined to marry a man chosen by her family. She was stabbed in Avaniyapuram on December 20 and was subsequently admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital with multiple stab injuries to the throat and shoulders. She later succumbed to her injuries on Monday (December 22). The police arrested her father and remanded him to judicial custody, and were on the lookout for her brother. The police said Priyanka was working as a nurse in Tirunelveli, while her family lived in Koppu Sinthampatti near Aruppukottai. The family had recently arranged her engagement to a man from Villapuram in Madurai. However, Priyanka had informed them that she was in a relationship with another man, who belonged to the same caste as her. After Priyanka left home, her family members lodged a complaint with the All Women Police Station in Aruppukottai. As she told the police that she was unwilling to return with her family, she was provided accommodation at a shelter home. On December 20, Ramesh and Balamurugan took Priyanka from the shelter home and brought her to the residence of Ramesh’s elder daughter, Aishwarya, in MMC Colony, Avaniyapuram. According to the police, the father and son took Priyanka into a room and locked it from the inside. Balamurugan allegedly stabbed her repeatedly, allegedly acting on the directions of Ramesh. The Avaniyapuram police initially booked Ramesh and Balamurugan for attempt to murder. However, following the woman’s death, the case was altered to one of murder. Further investigation is under way.
