Wild boar menace discussed at length during grievances redress meeting for farmers in Coimbatore
Discussion on destruction caused to crops by wild boars dominated the farmers’ grievances redress session conducted on Wednesday after a gap of two months. The combined meeting for November and December witnessed farmers demanding rights to chase back the wild boars into the forest. The monthly meeting could not be conducted during November in view of the 87th seminar for Agricultural Scientists and Extension Officers at Chennai. Farmers lamented on the loss of livelihood caused by herds of wild boars, particularly in the fields adjoining forest areas in Pollachi, Madukkarai, Thondamuthur, Perur, Mettupalayam, Annur, and Periyanaickenpalayam. The farmers demanded effective measures by District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar and senior officials of Forest Department who took part in the meeting. Vivasayigal Sangam Coimbatore district unit president Palanisami said farmers had been facing severe economic setback due to crop damages caused by the wild boars. He opposed the Draft Seeds Bill, 2025, and demanded its withdrawal by the Central Government. Farmers spoke in unison on the need for amendment to Wildlife Protection Act for handling the wild boars and peafowl. Compensation must be provided for crop damages caused by wild elephants, they emphasised. Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam general secretary Kandasamy said that Forest Department should emulate their counterparts in Kerala in shooting down wild boars. Speakers sought renewal of gun licences for farmers without delay. Farmers also highlighted the need for restoration of the several streams in Ponnuthu and Chinnathadagam.
