Nurses detained as their strike enters sixth day

The Guduvanchery police on Tuesday evening detained and 365 nurses who were protesting at the Nandhivaram Guduvanchery Urban Health Centre. They were protesting for the sixth consecutive day on Tuesday. Nurses affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Nurses Empowerment Association on Thursday staged a hunger protest in the city to put forward their various demands, including regularisation of services and implementation of “equal pay for equal work”. After talks with officials failed, police removed many of the nurses from the protest venue late in the evening last Thursday. They were escorted and taken to the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus in Kilambakkam. However they continued their strike in Kilambakkam and later at the Nandhivaram Guduvanchery Urban Health Centre reiterating their demands. Based on a complaint lodged by the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of the health centre, the police detained the nurses and kept them in a building adjacent to the facility. They were released later on Tuesday evening. Published - December 24, 2025 12:43 am IST
