AICC’s five-member committee in talks with DMK for seat sharing: Chidambaram
“A five-member committee formed by All India Congress Committee is holding talks with the DMK regarding alliance,” said senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P. Chidambaram. Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, he said he could not furnish any details before they completed their talks. In 2008, the UPA government formed specialised forces and took action against Maoists and Naxals in Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, etc. The BJP-led government was merely continuing that process but, he said, he welcomed the fact that Maoists and Naxalites were decreasing in those regions. Regarding increasing protests by nurses and teachers in the State, he said during election times, protests would always occur to press for certain demands. The government would resolve them through negotiations, he added. Though Magalir Urimai Thogai Scheme would cause an additional financial burden on the State, Mr. Chidambaram said economic experts across the world, however, had accepted that it would yield many benefits. As many States were implementing that scheme under different names, critics should look at the benefits present in this scheme, he noted. Mr. Chidambaram implicitly linked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in Christmas celebration after 11 years and attacks carried out against Christian children who were dancing and singing on the streets.
