Rameswaram mechanised boat fishermen observe strike against arrest of 12 Indian fishermen

Condemning the arrest of 12 fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy on Tuesday, mechanised boat fishermen in Rameswaram observed a one-day strike here on Wednesday. The 12 fishermen Sandhiya Nivastan, Kayous Raj, James Cayton, Prabath, Doja, Anthony Tilman, Agbo Nijo, Maria Anto Beston, Gorbachev, Madansan, Nimal Sahayam, and Anand who were fishing in the Mannar sea region were apprehended along with the boat belonging to Jothibasu, by Sri Lankan Navy personnel. The fishermen who were arrested on charges of allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and using banned fishing nets, were sent to judicial custody until January 5 and were lodged in Vavuniya prison. They condemned the repeated arrests and urged the Union and State governments to take swift action to repatriate the detained fishermen. Due to the strike, over 600 mechanised boats remained anchored at the fishing jetty and more than 2,500 fishermen abstained from venturing into the sea, bringing fishing activities in the region to a standstill.
