PCR special court sentences three men to triple life and one to double life imprisonment in 2015 Srivaikuntam case
The Protection of Civil Rights (PCR) special court in Thoothukudi on Wednesday sentenced three men to triple life and another accused with double life imprisonment for murder of a man in Srivakuntam in 2015. In 2012, a case was registered at Srivaikuntam police station under Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Act) after K. Arumugaraja of Velur village in Srivaikuntam, was attacked with a machete and his mother was threatened with murder due to prior enmity. The accused involved in the crime were identified as V. Kasi, 42, K. Esakkimuthu, 36, E. Kannan alias Kannaperumal, 45, M. Siva alias Sivalingam, 34, C. Thalavai, 45 and P. Duraimuthu, 34, all from the same locality. In 2015, while Arumugaraja was present in Srivaikuntam locality, the same group of accused except Kannan, again fatally attacked him with a machete. A murder case was registered at Srivaikuntam police station. Both cases were tried before PCR special court in Thoothukudi. After trial, P.V. Vasheeth Kumar, sessions judge, special court for trial cases under SC&ST Act sentenced the accused as follows: Esakkimuthu, Thalavai and Siva to triple life imprisonment with ₹13,000 fine each, Kasi to double life imprisonment with a fine of ₹7,000. Kannan has been sentenced to five years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹12,000 in an attempt to murder case. Duraimuthu had died during the trial proceedings.
