‘The Night Manager’ Getting Chinese-Language Adaptation On Youku

Eddie Peng ( Black Dog ) and Sean Lau ( Papa ) will star in a Chinese-language adaptation of The Night Manager . Streaming service Youku has ordered the series, which will also star Isabella Leong and Carman Lee and has Kelvin KinLong Chan directing. Peng, who was in the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard 2024 winner Black Dog , will play Jonathan Chan (aka Jonathan Pine, the role Tom Hiddleston plays in the BBC and AMC series), while Sean Lau will play as Richard Kwok (aka Hugh Lawrie’s Richard Roper). Leong ( The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor ) plays female lead role as Jed Cheung (aka Jed Marshall), and Lee ( The Condor Heroes 95 ) plays Angela Fok (aka Angela Burr). Watch on Deadline Per the synopsis, here’s the story: “Jonathan Chan, the polished night manager of Bangkok’s Emerald Palace Hotel, hides a dark past rooted in Hong Kong’s White Rock Detention Center, where betrayal and loss shaped the man he has become. When evidence linking tycoon Richard Kwok to illegal arms trading surfaces, Jonathan is recruited by ICAC’s relentless Angela Fok to infiltrate Kwok’s empire. “As he gains Kwok’s trust, Jonathan finds himself entangled with Jed Cheung, Kwok’s girlfriend, whose growing connection to him complicates his mission. Caught in a dangerous web of deception, morality, and revenge, Jonathan must confront his past and decide how far he’s willing to go before losing himself entirely.” Night Manager producer The Ink Factory and The Little Drummer Girl maker 127 Wall Productions are co-producing. Character 7 and Demarest Films are also attached and Fifth Season is handling international distribution. Shooting is taking place in Hong Kong, Macau, Bangkok, Kanchanaburi and Phuket. Cheung Feifan ( Cold War 1994 ) and He Liangyu ( Cold War 1994 ) are writing, with Donghui Wang leading the executive producing team and overseeing overall production of the show, along with producer Julia Song and executive producer Chris Cornwell. Joe Tsai and Arthur Wang executive produce for 127 Wall Productions; with Simon Cornwell, Stephen Cornwell, Michele Wolkoff, and Tessa Inkelaar doing the same for The Ink Factory. Also executive producing are Clare Cornwell for the John le CarrĂ© estate, Susanne Bier, Stephen Garrett for Character 7, David Farr and William B. Johnson for Demarest Films. Youku plans to debut the 12-episode series, which is based on John le Carré’s novel of the same name, in late 2026. There has previously been a Hindi-language version of The Night Manager for JioHotstar. Simon Cornwell and Stephen Cornwell, founders and co-CEOs at The Ink Factory, said: “It’s an enormous privilege to be working with leading Chinese streamer Youku to continue building the international legacy of le Carré’s writing.
