Nurse murdered at home in Bengaluru after argument with colleague over marriage turns fatal
Bengaluru police have arrested a 25-year-old nurse for allegedly murdering his 39-year-old colleague following an argument over marriage. The accused has been identified as Sudhakar, a native of Hassan. The deceased, Mamatha H.L., was a resident of Pragathipura at Kumaraswamy Layout in south Bengaluru. She was found murdered in her house on December 25 morning. According to the FIR, Mamatha had been working as a staff nurse at Jayadeva hospital for the past four years. She shared a rented house with a female colleague. A senior police officer said Mamatha got acquainted with Sudhakar, a colleague, about a year ago. Investigations revealed that the two were friends and Mamatha had been suggesting that they get married. However, recently Sudhakar’s family fixed his marriage with another woman, leading to frequent arguments between the two, according to the police. On December 24, Mamatha’s roommate was at work when Mamatha returned home with Sudhakar. The next morning, Mamatha’s roommate asked the landlady to check whether Mamatha was at home. When there was no response after knocking on the door, the landlady peeped through a window and saw Mamatha lying on the floor in a pool of blood. She immediately alerted the neighbours and informed the police. Initially, the police relied on technical inputs and crime scene evidence. They got a breakthrough when they established that a man, later identified as Sudhakar, had dropped Mamatha home the previous night. An investigator told The Hindu that Sudhakar and Mamatha discussed the wedding after reaching her house. The discussion escalated into a heated argument, during which Sudhakar allegedly got hold of a kitchen knife and attacked Mamatha in her neck and throat. He fled the scene after she collapsed, fearing arrest. The alleged incident occurred during the intervening night (December 24 and 25) between 11.50 p.m. and 12.30 a.m. The Kumaraswamy Layout police have booked Sudhakar under BNS Section 103(1), which pertains to murder, following a complaint from Mamatha’s brother. He was arrested on December 25 evening. A Bengaluru court has remanded Sudhakar to police custody. “We have recorded his statement, but the weapon is yet to be recovered. Further investigation is under way to verify the claims made by the accused,” the officer said. Published - December 26, 2025 04:47 pm IST
