Coimbatore Corporation to identify additional parking space as visitor footfall at Semmozhi Poonga on the rise

The number of vehicles entering Semmozhi Poonga in Coimbatore during weekends and holidays has prompted Coimbatore Corporation to take steps to identify additional parking space. Vehicle records show that 622 cars, 2,187 two-wheelers and three buses entered the park on Saturday, December 20. The numbers rose on Sunday, December 21, when 960 cars, 4,624 two-wheelers and seven buses were recorded. Official data also show that 24,166 people visited the park on Sunday, after which vehicles were parked on one lane of the Gandhipuram flyover, leading to traffic congestion. Between December 11 and December 20, a total of 1,01,391 people visited the park. The park has parking capacity for 453 cars and 1,048 two-wheelers, with parking charges of ₹10 per hour for cars, ₹5 for two-wheelers and ₹30 for buses. “People spend long hours inside the park, with many staying longer in the evening. Programmes held at the amphitheatre, which has seating for 1,500 people, also extend the duration of visits, keeping parking slots occupied for most of the day,” said P. Pranav, a visitor. The police have placed a warning board along the park’s compound on Dr. Nanjappa Road, stating that parking is prohibited and violations will attract a fine of ₹1,000. A senior official from the Corporation said that additional parking space is being planned to handle the weekend crowd. “We are planning to include the area near the old entrance of the Central Prison as well as other sections within the prison grounds, and a detailed plan will be finalised soon,” the official said.
